Kate Oates is a graphic designer who has loved art, design, and crafts for as long as she can remember. She is a student at the University of Illinois-Champaign getting her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design, her Bachelor of Science in Advertising, and a minor in Art History. She has always loved art and trying to make the world around her a more beautiful place. She loves to create branding, illustrations, advertisements, and whatever else she can get her hands on. When she isn’t designing you can usually find her trying out new baking recipes, finishing a book as fast as she can, or running outside to see the sunset. For her capstone project, she created Renewed Catholic Stationery. This is a company that creates Catholic stationery and specifically an academic planner. Kate created the branding for the company including a logo, name, tagline, and color palette. Kate also designed the entire planner which includes everything a Catholic student would need: feast days, daily mass readings, weekly bible verses, a Lent planner, common prayers, a daily schedule, a homework planner, and a space for notes and gratitude. The flowers throughout the planner were drawn, carved out of linoleum, and then printed by Kate using a print-making technique called linocut. Kate was inspired to create this project because she has always loved stationery and planners and can never find one that has everything she wants. She also finds her faith very important and wanted to design a way for students to easily focus on both their faith and their school. Kate is looking forward to creating new products for Renewed including a sticker sheet for the planner and notepads. Check out her other projects on her portfolio, linked below!
