As a graphic designer I explore the relationship between culture and design. Being a first generation Mexican-American living in the city of Chicago, I have a distinct cultural experience. From a young age, I noticed the lack of Spanish that was present in public spaces despite Chicago having a large latino population. Apart from language, other design elements such as color, symbols, or photography contain a cultural significance. During my time at University of Illinois, I had the privilege to study and learn more about art from different cultures. These include Black Arts, Design in Japan, Islamic Architecture, and so much more. These classes helped me gain a better understanding of culture and design. My goal is to consider culture in my design process so that my design can have a wider outreach.
