I used a mix of digital and print design to investigate how one could help children become familiar with the United States state birds. I chose to work in illustration because I wanted to work in a medium that is relatable to children. I entered with an exploration of kid’s books, as well as coffee table books on birds, while developing a narrative that leads the characters through states to highlight certain birds. However, to my surprise, the four states that I chose for sentimental reasons had the same bird, the Northern Cardinal. I had expected each of the states that I’d planned to visit to have a unique bird, so I adapted my story accordingly. My final product for this show is the mockup for the book’s cover and page illustrations, with an intent to finish the book and print it in hardcover later this year.
